The Apology Your Kids Are Waiting For

I raised my voice at my son over something that, twenty minutes later, I couldn't even fully justify. The old instinct was to let it go, move on, let time smooth it over. Instead I sat down with him and said, 'I was wrong to yell. I'm sorry.'

He looked genuinely surprised. Not because the apology was unusual in tone, but because it happened at all — from a dad, to him, first.

Kids don't need a father who never makes mistakes. They need one who shows them what to do after making one. That single apology probably taught him more about character than a month of lectures would have.
